Monday night (tomorrow) at 7:30pm at the clubhouse unit owners will be able to listen to and ask questions of those other unit owners who have chosen to ask for us to vote for them to represent us on the Board of Directors. There are many candidates (10) this time so the process might take a long time.At the last meeting of this sort (March) the candidates all talked about changes that needed to happen. Several seemed to be saying that they would volunteer their time and energy to make those changes happen. Of the three that were elected at that time only one now remains. Of the members now on the BOD that one remaining newly elected donates the most time and energy. So it begs the question, what are the candidates really willing to do if they are elected?
I have heard several questions from unit owners that I will share here, and I invite you to share questions that you might have, also:
- How much time is a candidate willing to donate to the job of being on the BOD?
- What responsibilities are they willing to take on?
- Will they do new-resident screenings (a mandatory function that must be performed by a BOD member and that currently only one BOD member is willing to perform)?
- Are they willing to serve as Treasurer (analyze financial statements, sign checks, make reports to the community about our financial situation)?
- Are they willing to be the Secretary (take minutes at meetings and publish them within a few days after a meeting)?
- Are they willing to walk the property and actually "lay-eyes-on" buildings not on their own street to improve their perspective on issues of up-keep, refurbishment, improvements, etc?
- Are they willing to donate time to a Community Relations event like the annual Halloween party that Elliot Schertzer used organize.
- What is their temperament when it comes to conflict resolution: try to work things out through compromise (discussion with emphasis on common good) or try to win in court (sue to determine who is right and who is wrong).
Are they willing to accept special assignments, like:
- interviewing property managers
- obtaining information about community lighting
- ways to expand/improve the parking situation
- studying the state statutes for compliance issues
- becoming adept at Robert's Rules of Order
- donate time, energy, expertise to a newsletter, flyers, etc
What do you think a BOD member should be willing to do? What questions do you think should be asked of the candidates?
